Kingston Penitentiary
Friday, September 30, 2022
Kingston, ON

Who wants to go to jail? Well at least take a tour of a Canada's oldest reformatory prison. The
Kingston Penitentiary, better known as the Kingston Pen, was a former maximum-security prison that
operated from June 1, 1835, until it ceased operations on September 30, 2013. It held many secrets
over the years, as well as many notorious inmates, Paul Bernardo, Clifford Olson, and Wayne Boden,
to name a few. At one point in time, there were child prisoners as young as 8 years old and a few
woman prisoners too. Even Charles Dickens mentioned the prison in his book American Notes from
when he visited in 1842. Learn about the life and times of being incarcerated within these walls on
our extended tour, where you will also see different workshops, the laundry room, the Regional
Treatment Institution, and the gymnasium. Before our tour we will enjoy lunch at the Mandarin
buffet in Kingston.
